Hourly News App Reviews

buggy, wont play source after unchecked box

For some reason, the application has a lot of errors. I unchecked two boxes in the middle of the offering, Fox and another new source I dont want to listen to, and then checked (yes) for CBS…but when the feed gets to the third source and an unchecked box, it will not jump to CBS, its just stuck there, and I have spend way to much time trying to get it to play CBS. This is the first time Ive ever written a review.

Does What it Claims, Simply and Well.

What more can you ask?

A simple function, performed well

I appreciate the mere microseconds it takes for this program to present the hourly NPR news. Well done!

Two thumbs up. Way up.

Really love this app. Quick news updates. Just great.

Just friggin great.

Never felt compelled to review before but this app is just great. Simple and brilliant for news junkies.

Instant News

Hourly News delivers a selection of concise reports from a good selection of radio news sources. It works with elegant simplicity, and provides a quick news break whenever you want it. Simple genus.

near perfect

Does exactly what I want EXCEPT give me access to my local NPR station, but it’s great and I’m glad I bought it

Nice 3 buck App

Nice little app for 3 dollars. But, I have not tested other like apps.

Simple, easy, effective

This is a wonderful little app. It is unobrtusive, does what it says and does not have any glitches yet that I have found. I use it every morning while checking email and getting ready for the day, wonderful addition. Easier than dealing with downloading podcasts and dealing with them...

Error prone and intrusive

Great when it works, but latest version (1.2.2) gives “File Error 13” most times I try to start the app. Problem is, this results in a progressive series of dialog boxes that report the error over ~5 minutes, and these sit on top of all other windows on desktop! When this happens it is impossible to kill the app without restarting the computer.

Good app, some bugs

It plays the news well enough, but the app has its quirks. Buttons disappear when switching between menus, and trying to add custom sources is kinda clumsy. I think I paid three times trying to add my feeds :-/ oh well...

Great app, but I dont like the sound effect when the window disappears

I think this is a really good app, small, smart, fast, beautiful. However, I have a suggestion that the sound effect when the window disappears is really annoying. I dont think that is necessary. Here is the reason: there are only two chances we can hear this disappear ”pu~”. One is when I play my radio, under this circumanstance, this “pu~” is actually a noise for me to hear my news. Second chance is when I stop my radio, when I stop my radio, i mean: please quiet! and this time, this so-called sound effect is kind of annoying too. So, please remove this “pu~” sound effect, I dont need it.

Desperately Needs more Channels

It’s OK but lots of repetitious news—reminds me of cable TV—same stuff over and over…. -- And the “Add Custom Sources” wants to charge you again and again even after you’ve already paid!

Great Idea, on its way to 5 stars

My guess is this app started out as a menu bar to make NPRs "Hourly News" a bit more accessible. Heres the pros: - Easy way to access NPRs hourly feed. - Easy way to access other feeds too, I counted 16, mostly general news, but also a few stock specific choices, a tech news choice and ESPN SportsCenter. - Can play at Macs Startup automatically. Cons: - There are a few bugs, for example the program, called "hourly news" doesnt actually play every hour - it plays all your sources once, then stops and you have to click it to get it to play again later. Value: - Its probably more of a $1-2 app, but $3 isnt outragous. Tips: Reading other users complaints, one user complained about the beep sound it makes - you can turn that off in preferences. One user complained about the tutorial - I didnt find it to be intrusive and appreciated it. One user complained about errors - its never thrown an error nor crashed once yet for me. One user complained about needing more channels - 16 seems to be enough for me, but certainly more is always welcome! Overall: I found it to be a great addition to my Mac, and Ive enjoyed listening to the news from time to time. Once they add an option for this to auto play hourly, it will be a 5 star app to me.

Broken.

This app used to be awesome, now it stops mid stream and craps a ton of alert windows.

Quit working

Loved the app when it worked. Somehow it got damaged, so I deleted the app as instructed and downloaded it again. Still wont start up.

Upgrade Doesnt Work

Cant lauch the app with Mountain Lion. Bummer.

New Version

Just updated and now it wont open. Glad I spent money on this! Nice update! Refund?

One of my favorite app - love getting news briefs this way

Sorry to hear about other folks problems, but the update is working just fine on my Intel iMac running Mavericks, and this is a program that I use at least three or four times a day. I love getting these news briefs so quickly with the click of a button and how you can set up the program to move automatically moving from news source to news source or add you own.

Streamlined and Minimal

Just like the iOS app, Hourly News does not disappoint. Works great, looks great too, and stays in sync with my phone. Win.
